DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS DEMONSTRATED 16% SALES GROWTH AFTER TWO YEARS OF STAGNATION

During the period from January to May 2017, pharmacies sold almost 20.6 billion rubles’ worth of dietary supplements, which is 16% more compared to the same period in 2016, according to AlphaRM. Since 2015, the development of dietary supplements market slowed down, and showed negative dynamics in 2016: minus 6% compared to 2015.

The expert attributed the increase in demand to the strengthening of the ruble in early 2017.

“This increase is due to the dynamics of exchange rates, since most manufacturers are foreign companies, while Russian manufacturers usually purchase foreign raw materials and production equipment. The equipment maintenance is also dependent on foreign currency,” said AlphaRM’s market analyst Olga Kononova.

Autumn and winter bring the best sales of vitamins for the prevention and treatment of ARVI. Spring is the high season of dietary supplements for weight loss. In May, sales are on a traditional decline compared to March and April, because weight loss supplements have a much smaller proportion in sales than vitamins. In general, analysts record a growing demand for dietary supplements since the beginning of 2017. This is partly caused by an intensified marketing company that includes advertising on TV, radio and the Internet. Since a considerable number of market players are represented by foreign companies with large professional marketing departments, we should expect a positive trend in 2018 as well. The most active and effective marketing programs take place on the Internet, especially in social networks.

In Olga Kononova’s opinion, “Even taking into account the decline in sales in the summer, the annual results of 2017 will be high compared to the previous two years.”
